Is anybody ready for traditional foods?
This list is long (and delicious).
Remember two important grammatical points when building sentences with these words:
- Animate/Inanimate Gender Agreement:
There are two ways of saying ‘I want to eat [something]’ followed by a noun. And two ways of saying ‘I like the taste of [something]’
For example:- With animate nouns:
- ninohtê-mowâw
ninohtê-mowâw pahkwêsikan – I want to eat bannock. - niwîhkipwâw
niwîhkipwâw wâpos. I like the taste of rabbit.
- ninohtê-mowâw
- With inanimate nouns:
- nonohtê-mîcin
ninohtê-mîcin iyinimina. – I want to eat blueberries. - niwîhkistên
niwîhkistên iyinima. – I like the taste of blueberries.
- nonohtê-mîcin
- With animate nouns:
- Number agreement (for Animate nouns)
For animate nouns in plural form, both the noun and the animate verb form also need to show number agreement. Show number agreement by adding –ak to both if the noun is plural:- ninohtê-mowâw wâpos – I want to eat rabbit.
- ninohtê-mowâwak wâposwak – I want to eat rabbits.
- niwîhkip
- wâwak wâposwak. I like the taste of rabbits.
