Public announcements surrounding health issues are something we take for granted in English and French. To find them in Cree – in competently written Cree that trained readers can read reliably – is a major step for a 21st-century language. Beyond their obvious purpose in the community, they also help normalize terminology into day-to-day use, and that’s pretty impressive. j
Sincere congratulations are owed to Véronique Mireault (a student at First Nations University in the Cree 425 “Advanced Translation from English to Cree” course), who translated this Aids Programs South Saskatchewan brochure in y-dialect, (with editorial help from Solomon Ratt). Véronique, for whom Cree is a third language and work in progress, provided the audio herself. As they made this one happen, they also set the stage for more to come, and we look forward to sharing them here.
