Eclipse
Sacred celestial round dance.
Sun and moon
Dance together. Ring of fire.
I sit quietly.
The annular eclipse of the sun on Saturday, 14 October 2023 was only partial in Canada, and then blocked by clouds, But the word and concept are still a powerful concept to teach in Cree. Thanks to Solomon Ratt for making it poetic, to Charlie Venne for the word wâsîskotîw for “ring of fire”, and to Wilfred Buck for the vocabulary consult. This undated photo of an annular eclipse – also known as “ring of fire” – was taken by the solar optical telescope Hinode as the Moon came between it and the Sun. Photo credit: JAXA/NASA
