The life’s work of Cree language warrior Matilda Lewis was recognized yesterday at Meadow Lake when she was presented a newly minted King Charles III Coronation Medal. She stood alongside nine other individuals from the area – each equally impressive in his or her own way.
We know Matilda best as a founder and director of kânîyâsihk Culture Camps, the land-based Cree immersion program she co-founded with her son Kevin. The award was presented by Gary Vidal, Member of Parliament for Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River, who reminded us that, as the first person from Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation to earn a Bachelor of Education degree, Matilda has never ceased to teach, mentor and lead the next generation of Cree speakers and educators.
mistahi kimamihcihinān, Matilda.
Congratulations, Matilda: You fill us with pride.
