CARFAC – (Canadian Artists’ Representation/Le Front des artistes canadiens), is a national, artist-run organization that advocates for the economic and legal rights of visual and media artists in Canada. They’ve just released a beautiful new online publication, Indigenous Protocols for the Visual Arts, which they describe as:
an essential resource for navigating Indigenous protocols for visual artists and the arts community. This website is part of an ongoing initiative to strengthen respect for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis visual art and artists, as well as their legal and moral rights in the territory now known as Canada.
Cree Literacy Network is especially pleased to announce that the publication has been produced in English, French, Inuktitut and Plains Cree (nêhiyawêwin, y-dialect).
I particularly appreciate the salute it includes to the late Greg Younging, whose legacy has been best known for his work in publishing, and his influential handbook (now in its second edition): Elements of Indigenous Style: A Guide for Writing By and About Indigenous Peoples.
We’re embedding and preserving the CARFAC pdf files here, in Cree and in English, to recognize the significance of this document for visual artists, but also to recognize the dedicated work of the anonymous translator who laboured to present the message in Cree as an act of reclamation in itself.
