The Cree Literacy Network will always be proud to call the late Dr Freda Ahenakew one of our Honorary Founders. And though she was far too humble to have ever imagined a moment such as this, we are watching with great pleasure as attention builds around this weekend’s world premiere of the documentary about her life, written and directed by her granddaughter Tristin Greyeyes. And despite her disinterest in the spotlight (“aah, kiyâm!”) I’m sure she would be thrilled to see the attention being focused to nêhiyâwêwin in a day and age when the revitalization she envisioned is finally taking root.
I’m using this post to archive some of the attention the documentary is gathering in support of the work she valued so deeply, and her continued and growing legacy, which we at Cree Literacy Network work constantly to preserve and promote (as she said we were meant to do!)
