In the Beginning (Bible Story): Dolores Sand (y-dialect)

Dolores Sand (aka “The Creeture”) prepared this video reading (and others) to share through the FaceBook group of Muskoday First Nation Community School

This video presents a children’s version of the Bible’s Creation Story. The book, “In the Beginning,” is one of a thirty-volume set of Bible stories – all in Plains Cree – published by the Canadian Bible Society (and available there for purchase). The stories were translated into Cree by Dolores and Gayle Weenie.

The books are only available as a boxed set (at $100, that works out to under $3.50 per volume). What the website doesn’t mention is that each purchase includes access to all thirty books in e-reader format, and the e-reader copy includes professionally recorded audio featuring Dolores herself. 1. This may be a long shot, our family is searching for a CREE BIBLE (quite old), and in the book it has SINCLAIR family names.

Backstory: my G-G-Grandfather, Rev Benjamin Sinclair was a lay-minister with the Methodist church in the mid 1800’s and was under the supervision of Rev James Evans, who helped to create the Cree syllabic that was eventually used to print and distribute these Bibles to missionaries.

One of the very first Cree Bibles printed (c. 1860) was given as a gift to Rev Benjamin Sinclair and he passed it down to his sons, his youngest Benjamin George Sinclair lived the longest and died in 1963.

It was then passed down to his eldest child, Catherine, but shortly thereafter (maybe 1964) a con-man swindled it from her in either Redwater or Waskatenau, Alberta and it was never seen again.

There were rumors it was held in the archives of the United Church of Canada, but in communications with archivists and curators, it does not appear to be in their hands.

If anyone should come across a Cree Bible that has the surname of Sinclair inscribed within, please let me know. Very specific details of our family tree is written in it.

Thank you in advance for any information you might have or leads you provide.
